Training principles by Morihei Ueshiba
武
Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido, established fundamental principles for training that remain valid to this day.
- Aikido decides between life and death with a single strike. During practice, follow the instructor's guidance and do not try to force techniques.
- Aikido is the way by which one defeats a thousand enemies. Even when practicing with a single partner, be prepared for an attack from any direction.
- Training should always be joyful. Practice in a spirit of mutual respect and joy of movement.
- The teacher can only teach you a small part. You must acquire most of the art through your own diligent practice and reflection.
- Daily practice begins with a warm-up and gradually increase the intensity. Do not overexert yourself. Even older people can practice with joy and without injury.
- The purpose of aikido is to train both body and mind and to develop sincere, honorable people. The techniques are sacred and must not be shown to the uninitiated.
